Two Words

By Skip Heitzig | Tuesday, April 15, 2025

There are two words that can change bad news into good news. Added to any situation, they can alter any outcome. They can change your life.

But God.

These simple words form a powerful truth. There may not be two more hopeful words in existence, because they point us to the One who is able to change our lives forever.

No matter who you are, how you've lived, or what you've done, a but God moment can radically change who you were and who you are.

Because with God, the Bible says, "nothing will be impossible" (Luke 1:37). The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the ultimate but God moment in history. If God can do that, then God can do anything.

In Acts 13, the apostle Paul spoke of the death and burial of Jesus. "Now when they had fulfilled all that was written concerning Him, they took Him down from the tree and laid Him in a tomb. But God raised Him from the dead" (vv. 29-30).

Jesus died, but God. You see, difficulty must always be measured by the capacity of the person doing the work. No one can raise the dead to life.

But God can.

As we celebrate the resurrection this Easter week, God has a message for you. "To you the word of this salvation has been sent" (Acts 13:26).

Now, you may feel that your life is a mess, but God has a message that will speak to your mess. In a nutshell: He cares for you. He loves you with an everlasting love.

God loves us and wants us to have hope, even when we fail. So, He spoke through creation and through His prophets. He even sent a Messenger to us.

Paul continued, "For those who dwell in Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they did not know Him, nor even the voices of the Prophets which are read every Sabbath, have fulfilled them in condemning Him" (v. 27).

Paul moved from speaking about "the word of salvation" in verse 26 to speaking about "Him" in verse 27. God sent a Message, and they crucified Him. God's ultimate message to humanity is not a sermon, a prophecy, or a law. It's a Person: Jesus Christ.

All those messages in the Old Testament were pointing to a Messenger. The Jews called Him Messiah. We call Him Jesus. God's final message before judgment is His hand of love extended to us, saying, "I love you. I'm sending My Son to you to pay for your sins" (see Hebrews 1:1-2).

God's message for you is His Messenger to you: Jesus Christ. Christianity is not a creed, a ritual, or an institution. Christianity is Christ—personally. "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life" (John 3:16).

Who is Jesus to you? How have you responded personally to God's Messenger, Jesus Christ? Have you rejected Him, or have you invited Him in?

The words but God can be part of your story. I hope they are. "But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ" (Ephesians 2:4-5).

I hope that's your testimony today.

In His strong love,

"Your teaching helps me to understand God. My life is not easy and there was a time I was jealous of my husband because he is in heaven and I have to deal with so much. I almost couldn't take it. One day I told God to quit, but then He let me know He is always there, so I decided to go further in my life with Him. It's still not easy but I know one day I will understand."
