Impossible

By Skip Heitzig | Tuesday, April 8, 2025

When God told Abraham, "I will make you a great nation" (Genesis 12:2), He was promising children to an elderly man. Eventually, Abraham's wife Sarah suggested they fulfill God's promise through their own efforts: he would use her maidservant, Hagar, to bear him a son (see Genesis 16:1-4).

Later in Genesis 18, God visited Abraham in human form. Abraham offered his finest hospitality. He provided water to wash his visitors' feet, a freshly prepared meal, and Sarah made fresh bread from fine flour (see vv. 4-7).

After the Lord had rested and enjoyed a meal, He made an announcement that zeroed in on Sarah. "Sarah your wife shall have a son" (see v. 10). Like her husband, Sarah was well past the age of childbearing. In human terms, it was impossible for her to have a baby. Sarah, who was listening from inside the tent, "laughed within herself, saying, 'After I have grown old, shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also?'" (v. 12).

"And the Lord said to Abraham, 'Why did Sarah laugh, saying, "Shall I surely bear a child, since I am old?" Is anything too hard for the Lord? At the appointed time I will return to you, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.’ But Sarah denied it, saying, 'I did not laugh,' for she was afraid. And He said, 'No, but you did laugh!'" (vv. 13-15).

It's interesting that when God first made this promise, Abraham laughed (see Genesis 17:15-21). But Abraham laughed from joy because he believed God. Sarah's laughter was from unbelief. She thought, "It ain't gonna happen. We're old."

Abraham, the friend of God, was conformed to God's will. He believed God and was willing to walk in obedience because of that belief, even though he floundered and failed and went along with Sarah's scheme to have a child with Hagar. Sarah showed unbelief and unwillingness.

Consider the question God asked of Abraham and Sarah, and answer it in your own life: Is there anything too hard for the Lord? Of course not! Genesis 1:1 says, "God created the heavens and the earth." Jeremiah said, "Ah, Lord God! Behold, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and outstretched arm. There is nothing too hard for You" (Jeremiah 32:17).

When you believe the Lord created the heavens and the earth, you can have confidence that He is able to take care of you. So, when you pray, recognize who you're praying to. In Acts 4, the disciples began their prayer with, "Lord, You are God, who made heaven and earth and the sea, and all that is in them" (see v. 24). They recognized God's ability before they presented their need.

When you're talking to God, begin by saying, "You can do anything. My little problem is nothing to You. Show me what to do, Lord." Approach it in faith rather than in unbelief.

One final thought. When the Lord came to Abraham's tent, He didn't say, 'I'm coming in!" He waited for Abraham to invite Him in. That's how God works, by invitation. Jesus said, "Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me" (Revelation 3:20).

If you want the Lord in your life, you have to invite Him. It doesn't matter how messed up your life is. God is in the business of taking impossible cases and transforming them. Is anything too hard for the Lord?

So, why not invite Christ to come in right now?

"Your teaching helps me to understand God. My life is not easy and there was a time I was jealous of my husband because he is in heaven and I have to deal with so much. I almost couldn't take it. One day I told God to quit, but then He let me know He is always there, so I decided to go further in my life with Him. It's still not easy but I know one day I will understand."
