Get Prequalified: Finding a Mate - Part A

Dating can be exciting. It can also get weird and end poorly. I like the common sense of one who quipped, "Some people are unmarried for the same reason that some drivers run out of gas. They pass too many filling stations looking for their favorite brand!" Though dating was unknown in biblical times, let’s look at five principles in budding relationships to help you prequalify to build a solid, long-lasting, and satisfying Smart Home.

You won't be able to love others if you don't love the Lord more.

Meet the Architect - Part B

In this first message of our Smart Home series, we focus on the foundational elements. Let’s meet the Architect of the home and the family—God Himself. His blueprints for the people He creates include satisfying relationships and integrated operation. We should make sure to build alongside of Him so that our homes become satisfying places of refuge, palaces of joy, and platforms for worship. Let’s take a fresh look at Solomon’s instruction.

Abraham: Fact-Checking Your Future - Part B

Age is a limitation for some, but not for God—He can use any person at any age. Abraham was seventy-five years old when God called him and one hundred when Isaac was born. Human restrictions and limitations of the past cannot confine God; in fact, He can use those things to accomplish His will for the future. In this message, Skip Heitzig dives into Abraham's story to show you that salvation by faith was always God's plan.

Christmas Through the Ages

Christmas stands as one of the major holidays within the church. On Christmas Day, we celebrate the incarnation, God coming to earth in human form through the person of Jesus of Nazareth. In this teaching, Skip Heitzig reflects on the unique aspects of Jesus' birth, looking to Scripture to find where Christmas began and why.

Ornaments

The night Jesus was born, an angel of the Lord invited all people to meet the newborn Savior, starting with the lowliest and most overlooked population: shepherds. This extraordinary invitation to the most ordinary people was a preview of the humble birth, life, and death of Jesus Christ. In this Christmas Eve message, Pastor Skip Heitzig explains how Jesus is God's gift to us and we are God's gift to Jesus for all eternity.

Fact-Checking Your Lifestyle - Part B

Noah's legendary faith allowed him to look to the future as he refused to be "conformed to this world" in the present (see Romans 12:2). It takes enormous faith to build a boat hundreds of miles inland. Through his simple obedience to God's call to build the ark, Noah preached the news of a coming judgment. In this teaching, Pastor Skip challenges the notion that we can maintain a certain lifestyle as long as everyone else is doing it and calls us to go against the flow of popular culture.

Enoch: Fact-Checking Your Walk - Part B

How busy were you before the coronavirus pandemic? Was your work piling up with looming deadlines? Did your family have a full calendar? Many have discovered that we were moving too fast before life suddenly came to a halt. Even in ministry we can move too fast. The pandemic has forced us to slow down and evaluate our priorities. In this teaching, Skip Heitzig looks to Enoch to demonstrate how you have a powerful testimony by simply walking with God day after day.

Fact-Checking Your Worship - Part B

Not all worship is the same. Some worship focuses on us rather than God—an outpouring of feelings rather than faith. God accepts the worship that He prescribes, and Jesus said we ought to worship "in spirit and truth" (John 4:23). What type of worship are you engaged in? Is it inspired by God or by a form of idolatry? In this message, Skip Heitzig examines Abel's faith and helps you fact-check your own worship against God's Word.

Fact-Check Your Faith - Part B

There's no question that we're living in tough times—and tough times demand a tough faith. A certain measure of faith can be found just about everywhere, but not all faith stands up to a fact-check. When we face difficulties in our Christian walk, we need to recall the facts that support our faith, and remember that "all things work together for good to those who love God" (Romans 8:28). Whatever facts you may be facing, when you invite God's truth into the situation, you will find peace.

Discovering God; Discovering Myself - Part B

It’s appropriate that we conclude our series Shelter in Grace as our world is beginning to open up again from the effects of the coronavirus. Today we come to the conclusion of the book of Job where he finally meets up with his God and makes three powerful discoveries followed by one essential decision. His armchair-philosopher friends are silenced as God reveals Himself to Job. What he discovers about God and himself is humbling and insightful. Likewise, let’s also determine to be different after this lockdown.

The Ultimate Shelter - Part B

Job was impressive at the beginning of his trials. He immediately sheltered in grace by worshiping God and trusting His wisdom (see Job 1:20-22). But the sheer physical pain, emotional turmoil, and outside criticism wore him down, moving him out of his shelter. Now there is a sudden change in Job’s tone and outlook as he looks to the future to his ultimate shelter.

When Sheltering is a Problem - Part B

Staying cooped up in our homes has uncovered lots of underlying problems. Some are dealing with depression and their own identity, while others are struggling in their marriage relationships, having so much time with each other. As Job’s losses turned into prolonged suffering, he too struggled with deep issues, two of which we deal with today.

Down But Not Out! - Part B

Ouch! We all learn to say that word pretty early on in life, and we say it all the way through until the very end. Life hurts. Our life span is marked by life sorrows. But our response is what is central to the outcome. When life delivers a knockdown punch, it doesn’t need to become a knockout! Let’s see how Job got back up to shelter in grace.

The Need for a Strong Shelter - Part B

Since it seems that the present pandemic the world is facing will require more time to sort out and more patience on our part, I want to begin a new series called Shelter in Grace. Even the strongest, bravest, and most spiritual among us need God’s sheltering presence in the days ahead. I am praying that as life’s circumstances close in around us, God’s grace will open up for us new ways to grow and new joys to experience. Let’s consider someone in Scripture who discovered the need for a strong shelter in crisis: Job.

The Lion Is the Lamb - Part B

There's something marvelous about restored objects. People admire antique cars and collectors love to restore vintage vehicles, spending time and talent on them to reveal their original artistry. In a similar way, God loves to restore people. He takes broken people who have been damaged by sin and restores them fully—redemption through Jesus' resurrection. In this Easter message, Pastor Skip teaches on this monumental event, where people and angels sing songs of redemption for a risen King.

Cross Culture - Part B

We have already noticed how much the Bible speaks about blood and points to the cross of Christ. The apostle Paul even said, “God forbid that I should boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ” (Galatians 6:14). It’s as though the cross of Jesus Christ defines the very culture of Christianity itself. In Psalm 22, David points forward to Messiah’s great suffering and widespread rejection—and then His ultimate accomplishment.

God’s Astonishing Servant - Part B

Isaiah has been called the messianic prophet because of the number of his predictions about the coming Messiah. Of all the Old Testament writings that foretell Christ, Isaiah 52 and 53 are the pinnacle. They capture the person and work of Christ and atoning sacrifice with precision and clarity like no other text. Seven hundred years before Jesus was born, His death was announced and detailed. Here Isaiah calls us to look on this servant and be astonished for six reasons.

"Your teaching helps me to understand God. My life is not easy and there was a time I was jealous of my husband because he is in heaven and I have to deal with so much. I almost couldn't take it. One day I told God to quit, but then He let me know He is always there, so I decided to go further in my life with Him. It's still not easy but I know one day I will understand."
